07.06.2018Apple has proved that it is not trying to force you to buy a new iPhone
Sometimes there was a suspicion that
Apple - and other gadget manufacturers - purposefully slow their products over time, so that you could buy new ones. This week, on new software for the
iPhone,
Apple showed users that it does not really try to get them to buy a new
iPhone, instead of simply updating the firmware on the old one.
So. At the end of last year,
Apple found a serious problem when users noticed that the new firmware slows the speed of some older
iPhone models. This was the first proof that
Apple really had some planned slowdown of the new firmware for its old devices. And that the company really wanted customers to buy new
iPhones after a certain period of time.
Then at
Apple they apologized and explained that by such a slowdown they wanted to help users who stopped working the battery at the most inopportune moment. As a result,
Apple just lowered the cost of replacing the battery on older models of the
iPhone.
Apple announced that its new software (
iOS 12), which will begin in September, will be available for the
iPhone, relating to 2013, including the
iPhone 5s.
This is an unprecedented step for Apple or any other smartphone manufacturer. Old devices based on
Android received a new version of the operating system only more than a year after they were launched in the series.
This means that those who have older
iPhone models will receive some (though not necessarily all) new features included in
iOS 12. It also means that they will receive the latest security updates from Apple, and since iOS 12 focuses on speeding up the iPhone, presumably there will be a higher performance.
Apple claims that
iOS 12 can open applications 40 percent faster, open the application camera up to 70 percent faster and open the keyboard 50 percent faster than the previous operating system, so the new software will not slow down, but should on the contrary speed up the of older models phones.
Consumers still have to be updated after all, but five or six years for the phone is a much better deal than two years, and that's better than what you can get from any other phone manufacturer.
Apple still can force some users to update more often. New cameras and fashion screens will be attractive. This should be about new hardware, not about software. And I would like
Android to follow this example.
